Paediatric FM Fitting

Hearing assistance for kids in noisy environments like the classroom.

A remote microphone listening device (previously called an FM system) is a small microphone worn by the teacher and a wireless link to a receiver (headphones or ear level) used by the student. The system brings the teacher's voice directly to the students's ears, overcoming the effects of noise and distance in the classroom. The effect of the teacher's voice being louder and seeming nearing helps the student to cue into their teachers's voice, to listen longer and more effectively, to have better recall of what was heard and to reduce their awareness of ambient noise. This system is helpful for people diagnosed with Auditory Processing Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder and unilateral hearing loss. We recommend the Phonak Roger system as this uses the latest digital adaptive technology to help maximise speech understanding in a noisy environment.

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) Assessments

An assessment to help determine how well a person processes the information that they hear.

Auditory Processing can be thought of as the “brain work” of hearing. It’s the way our brains make sense of what we hear. APD is an umbrella term for a variety of issues that affect the way the brain processes auditory information and it is defined as the “inability to make optimal use of what we hear”.

Individuals with APD usually have normal hearing, meaning that sound is being received by their ears, but they have difficulty in processing or understanding the information that they hear. This can lead to difficulty in recognising and interpreting the meaning of sounds, including spoken language. Please note that APD assessments cannot be provided for a client if they have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder or hearing loss.

Sign of Auditory Processing issues may include

  • Difficulty listening in environments with background noise
  • Difficulty following multi-step instructions
  • Requires instructions or information to be repeated
  • Easily distracted by noise
  • Problems with reading, writing and comprehension
  • Delayed language development

APD assessments are for children from the age of 7 years and over. Assessments are conducted by a senior qualified Audiologist with many years of experience and may also involve and Audiology student being present for learning purposes. An Auditory Processing assessment will take approximately two hours and will involve a standard hearing assessment and testing of a range of Auditory Processing Skills. Results may be discussed on the day and a detailed report will be posted out within a few days including recommendations made by the Audiologist.

Prior to arriving for your appointment we require two questionnaires (one for parents and one for the child’s teacher),to be completed and returned to Health2GO by email at health2go@flinders.edu.au - Links to download and print these forms are below. (These can also be posted out to you if needed). We also ask parents to provide copies of any reports from any other clinicians/doctors your child may have visited such as speech pathologists and psychologists etc.

Assistive Listening Devices

We can provide independent advice about other devices that can help you manage day to day tasks

Assistive Listening Devices (ALD’s) are a range of technologies that can be used by people with hearing loss to help with performing daily tasks at home, at work and in public spaces.
